What imposition actually means
When you fold a stack of sheets in half, the page that ends up next to page 1 is the last page of the booklet. So the first sheet carries pages n and 1 on its front and 2 and n−1 on its back; the second carries n−2 and 3, then 4 and n−3; and so on inward. Getting that sequence right by hand is where booklet printing usually goes wrong.
The page count has to be a multiple of four, because each folded sheet holds four pages. Anything else is padded with blanks at the end, and the status line tells you how many were added.
Signatures
A booklet made from one thick fold bulges at the spine and creeps outward — the inner pages stick out further than the outer ones. Printers avoid that by binding several thinner booklets (signatures) and stitching them together. Set pages per signature to 8, 16 or 32 and the imposition restarts for each group, which is what a bookbinder expects for anything over about 40 pages.
Printing it
- Print double-sided, flipping on the short edge — the sheets are landscape, so short-edge flipping is what keeps the backs upright.
- Choose actual size / 100%, not "fit to page": the imposition already sized everything.
- Fold the whole stack once through the middle and staple twice on the fold.
- For a right-to-left language, set Binding: right so the fold is on the other side.
FAQ
What page size do I print on?
Each output sheet is twice the width of an input page — so A5 pages produce A4 landscape sheets, and Letter pages produce Tabloid-width sheets. Print at 100% on that size and fold once.
Why were blank pages added?
A folded sheet always carries four pages, so the total must be a multiple of four. One to three blanks are appended at the end, which is where a real booklet has them too.
What is the gutter for?
It adds space at the fold so text near the spine is not swallowed by the crease. A few points is usually enough; more if you plan to trim the edges.
Should I use signatures?
For anything thicker than about 40 pages, yes. A single fold through many sheets causes visible creep and a bulging spine. 16 pages per signature is a common choice.
