When to use this tool
Stamp documents before sharing — DRAFT on a contract that's still in review, CONFIDENTIAL on a deck going to a small audience, your name + date on a CV before sending it out, or a status label on a deliverable so reviewers know which version they have. The watermark is a visual marker, not a security mechanism: anyone with a desktop PDF editor can remove it.
Step by step
- Drop the PDFs. The same watermark will be applied to every page of every file.
- Enter the watermark text (default
DRAFT). Short text reads best — keep it under ~12 characters for the centered preset. - Pick a position. Centered (rotated, faint, background-style) or one of the four corners (visible badge).
- Adjust font size, opacity, and rotation to taste. Defaults are sensible.
- Click "Watermark & download". Each file appears in the output list with a thumbnail showing the result.
Common use cases
- "DRAFT" on contracts in review. Centered, 45°, low opacity. Removes ambiguity about which version is final.
- "CONFIDENTIAL" on internal decks. Top-right corner, higher opacity, smaller size. Visible without obscuring content.
- Your name + date on a CV. Bottom-right corner, low opacity, makes plagiarism harder.
- "REVIEW COPY — Do not distribute" on early-access manuscripts.
- Page-corner labels for archive sets. Stamp a project ID into every PDF before zipping the archive.
- Branding light-touch. Company name at the bottom of every page, low-opacity.
Common mistakes
- Treating it as security. Watermarks can be removed. For tamper-resistant marking, use digital signatures (a desktop-only feature today).
- Setting opacity to 1. The watermark will obscure body text. Stay at 0.15–0.4 for centered, 0.6–0.9 for corner badges.
- Long centered text at default size. Centered text doesn't wrap; use ≤12 characters or drop the font size to ~30.
- Forgetting it stamps every page. If you only want page 1 stamped, extract page 1, watermark it, and merge it back — there's no per-page selection inside this tool yet.
FAQ
Can I use an image watermark / logo?
Not yet — this tool currently only stamps text. For an image watermark, the cleanest path is to draw the logo onto a one-page transparent PDF and merge / overlay it via a desktop tool (or wait for the image-watermark feature here).
Will the watermark be selectable text or a "burned-in" image?
It's real text drawn with Helvetica Bold, semi-transparent. That makes it crisp at any zoom level — and removable by anyone with PDF editing tools. If you need pixel-baked-in marking, run the result through PDF → Images and then Images → PDF.
Can I rotate corner watermarks?
The rotation field only affects the centered preset. Corner placements are drawn upright by design.
What font and colour does the watermark use?
Helvetica Bold, dark red (RGB 0.6 / 0.0 / 0.0). Customising those is on the wishlist; for now the colour is fixed.
